What is a Canadian Immigration Medical Exam?
A Canadian immigration exam is a medical examination of your health to determine entry or denial of immigration status. The exam is completed by a panel physician approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Immigration Medical Exams (IME) are available at our West Clinic. Instructions for booking and completing your medical are provided below.
Patients are responsible for examination costs, even if they have Alberta Health Care coverage.
Immigration Medical Appointment Instructions

Our panel physicians are only authorized to perform medicals on patients immigrating to Canada.
Fees and Testing
Fees are charged at the appointment. Payment is by cash, debit, or credit; a PIN is required.
- Medical exam: $240.00 per person.
- Chest X-ray: $75.00 per person, required for ages 11 years and up.
X-rays are done at our Bigelow Fowler West Clinic. You must have had your Immigration Medical Exam at the Bigelow Fowler Clinic to complete your X-rays here. You will need to present your passport or another form of photo identification.
Lab tests are required for ages 15 years and up. A fee will be charged by Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) at the time of testing; contact APL for the amount.
We recommend booking a lab appointment for the same day as your medical exam. Allow enough time between appointments, as the lab is at a different location. Walk-in patients are also accepted. If the same day is unavailable, book the next available day.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment
PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT, YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH THE PATIENT REGISTRATION FORM AND THE CONSENT FORM AND EMAIL THEM TO bigelowfowlerwest@proton.me NO LATER THAN 48 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT.

What to Bring to Your Appointment
- Required identification: A valid, up-to-date passport, Canadian driver's licence, or refugee status papers. Call the clinic if you are unsure about your ID.
- Required documentation: Any official papers received from Immigration Canada, such as a work permit, study permit, or visitor permit, if applicable. Bring any additional correspondence from IRCC and your IME number, if one has been assigned.
- Photos: No photos are required; a photo will be taken at your appointment.
- Prescription medications: Bring the bottles or a list of the names and dosages.
- Glasses: Bring them for the vision test if you wear them.
- Translator: If you need a translator, you are required to bring someone with you to your appointment.
If the proper identification or documentation is not brought to your appointment, the medical exam may be cancelled.
After Your Appointment
Our staff will submit your completed IME through E-Medical online services, the preferred delivery method of IRCC, within 7-10 days. Additional testing, physician visits, or specialist referrals required by IRCC may delay the process. You are responsible for these additional costs.
